The GeoFluv 2024 Study Trip had participants from Australia, Canada, Sweden, and Spain. The trip began in Alaska on 4 September and finished in New Mexico on 13 September. Participants visited thousands of acres of completed and active GeoFluv reclamation projects. GeoFluv Associates from Landforma in Australia, Restauracion Geomorfologica in Spain, VAST in Canada and Sweden, and GeoFluv/Carlson Software in the U.S.A. guided the participants.
The GeoFluv 2024 Study Trip:
• Helped users better understand the GeoFluv method and what makes it work,
• Set expectations for what is necessary to get the desired results and what will lead to problems,
• Allowed participants to see successful areas and problem areas,
• Allowed new users to learn from successful users,
• Provided opportunities to converse with regulatory staff and gain their perspective,
• Helped participants to distinguish pseudo-geomorphic reclamation from the real thing, return to their sites with increased confidence going forward,
• Allowed participants to see sites of varying scale,
• Allowed participants to see the method work in different climate regions helping them understand inputs may change but the method doesn’t,
• Highlighted that the outcome of geomorphic design is not a static, but rather a dynamic landform,
• Opened a thought process for participants on how they could implement GeoFluv designs at their site including the connection between production and closure planning,
• Introduced using Carlson Natural Regrade software to make GeoFluv designs, and
• Was a fun learning experience!
